Getting Started with Gmail

Gmail is one of the world's most widely used webmail services, offering a powerful combination of storage, search, and integration with other Google tools. Whether you're creating a new account or migrating from another provider, this guide walks you through every step.

Creating Your Gmail Account

  1. Go to mail.google.com and click "Create account".
  2. Choose whether the account is for personal use, work, or your business.
  3. Enter your first name, last name, and desired username (e.g. yourname@gmail.com).
  4. Set a strong password — at least 8 characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols.
  5. Add a recovery phone number and email address for account security.
  6. Accept Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Navigating the Gmail Interface

Once logged in, you'll see the main Gmail layout. Here's what each area does:

  • Inbox: Your default view showing incoming emails.
  • Starred: Emails you've flagged as important.
  • Sent: A record of all emails you've sent.
  • Drafts: Emails you've started but not yet sent.
  • Spam & Trash: Automatically filtered junk and deleted messages.

Setting Up Your Inbox Tabs

Gmail's tabbed inbox automatically sorts your mail into categories like Primary, Social, and Promotions. To configure this:

  1. Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner.
  2. Select "See all settings" and go to the Inbox tab.
  3. Check or uncheck the categories you want to appear as tabs.
  4. Click "Save Changes".

Importing Contacts and Old Emails

Switching from another provider? Gmail makes it straightforward to bring your data with you.

  • Go to Settings → See all settings → Accounts and Import.
  • Use "Import mail and contacts" to pull in messages from services like Outlook, Yahoo, or any IMAP account.
  • Gmail will fetch your old emails in the background — this can take a few hours.

Enabling Two-Factor Authentication

Before you start using Gmail regularly, it's strongly recommended to enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of security beyond your password.

  1. Visit your Google Account settings at myaccount.google.com.
  2. Go to Security → 2-Step Verification.
  3. Follow the prompts to link your phone number or an authenticator app.
